Violence Against Staff in Psychiatric Hospitals – A Study of Prevalence, Strain, and Resources

Project No. UVT BGW1738

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of the experiences of violence among employees in psychiatric hospitals. To this end, it is necessary to assess the prevalence of violence first. Differences among the various occupational groups will also be examined. Building on this, the consequences of this stress will be identified, particularly with regard to work- and health-related outcomes. Another key aspect is the examination of both resources and risk factors that may influence the relationship between violence and health-/work-related outcomes.

Systematic data collection on the prevalence and consequences of violence against staff in psychiatric facilities provides an evidence-based framework for occupational safety and health measures. Identifying both risk factors and resources makes it possible to develop targeted prevention programs and protect staff from the effects of experiencing violence.

Activities/Methods:

As part of a quantitative cross-sectional online survey, a random sample is drawn from a compiled list of psychiatric hospitals in Germany. The institutions included in the sample are asked to forward the questionnaire to their employees. The questionnaire assesses experiences of violence, health-related and work-related outcomes, and protective factors.
